Can tourism help rural Europe?

Between 2014 and 2024, almost 8 million people left rural EU regions, while cities gained over 10 million. Empty houses, closed shops, and fading traditions are now common.

Meanwhile, mass tourism has packed city squares but drained their soul. Think
Venice, Barcelona, or Dubrovnik. And marketing has pushed this rush, turning destinations into products and people into numbers.

But what if we get it right?

Regenerative tourism gives back more than it takes.

For us, it means small-scale, community-led experiences in rural areas that bring nature back, boost local pride, and make each place shine.

And conscious marketing is the bridge. It helps these places tell their story, attract the right visitors, and keep the benefits close to home.

Ideas meet reality

So what happened when these ideas met a real place?

  • Language shifted from features to benefits

  • Communication invited reflection, not urgency

  • Fewer channels, deeper alignment

  • Marketing became a filter, not a megaphone

  • Guests arrived with clearer expectations, and the place could stay true to itself

  • Marketing protected the place instead of pressuring it

Meet the Team

Got questions? We have answers for you!

  • If you’re half artist, half scientist — that’s classic marketer magic.

You might be a content creator, brand strategist, PR specialist, data analyst, entrepreneur, or someone helping a small, independent tourism or hospitality project tell its story. We especially welcome professionals working with small tourism businesses, where marketing can help create authentic, community-led experiences that make rural places thrive.

If you’re after fast funnels or cookie-cutter tactics, this won’t be your thing. But if you’re ready for meaningful, lasting impact, you’re in the right place.

    Here’s what you’ll get:

    • An immersive experience

Learn at Tertulia Coliving — a real example of regenerative tourism. Then, keep the momentum going with 6 online sessions to put your skills into action.

    • Hands-on, real-world learning

Take part in workshops, field visits, and co-create a real marketing campaign with your peers and the local community.

    • A network that lasts

Meet marketers, tourism professionals, and community leaders from across Europe. Share ideas, co-create solutions, and as a bonus, get access to the Conscious Marketing Movement online community to keep the conversation going after the program ends.

Psst… If you’d like to hear more about the program in our own words, we hosted a live Q&A session on 11 September 2025 where we answered common questions and shared how the program works in practice.

    Watch the Q&A replay

  • If you have EU income tax residency and work in tourism (or aspire to) and your role involves marketing, you can apply for one of 10 EU-funded scholarships.

    The scholarship covers:

    • Accommodation at Tertulia Coliving during the in-person week

    • On some days, we may have activities outside of Tertulia Coliving; meals during those outings are not included and will be at your own expense.

  • We’ve kept the program small — just 10 participants — so you’re never just another face in the crowd. You’ll be part of a close-knit group, learning, creating, and making an impact together.

Here’s a little preview of what you will learn and do:

    • Dive into regenerative tourism and conscious marketing with Tertulia Coliving as your living case study

    • Learn by doing through hands-on workshops, immersive field visits, and creative collaboration

    1 February–31 March 2026: Share the open-source toolkit

Help share the open-source toolkit built from our work during the training. You’ll be credited as a contributor alongside all participants, ambassadors, and partners. Flexible timing: you can do it at your convenience.

  • The in-person week takes place at Tertulia Coliving in rural Tuscany. Each day will include workshops, group sessions, and community living activities, with time built in for reflection and connection.

How do I get to Tertulia?

We encourage you to consider practising slow travel when making your way here, opting for transportation methods that are better for the environment.

    • The closest train station is Vicchio, Tuscany (approx. 1 hour direct train from Florence).

    • Closest airports: Florence, Pisa, and Bologna.

From Vicchio station, we will arrange group shuttles to Tertulia Coliving. A few days before the training, we’ll coordinate arrivals and departures together.

How is food organised? Will my dietary requirements be respected?

All meals at Tertulia Coliving are included. Our local Italian chef prepares seasonal, vegetarian cuisine, and most dietary requirements can be accommodated. Please let us know in advance about your preferences or restrictions. Meals outside of Tertulia Coliving are at your own expense.

What room options do you have?

Accommodation is in shared rooms, and we will do our best to pair participants by gender.

👉 For more details about the space, please visit the Tertulia Coliving website.

  • We understand that plans can change. Unfortunately, if you cancel less than 14 days before the in-person training, it will take us extra time and resources to find and prepare a replacement, and some costs (like accommodation and meals) are already committed.

    Here’s our cancellation policy:

    • Scholarship participants — €250 fee to help cover these costs

  • It takes a village to run a program like this, and we love working with people and organisations who share our vision for tourism that gives back. We are currently looking for sponsors for our project.

    • Who you are: An impact-driven brand, foundation, or organisation that believes tourism can be a force for good

    • What you’ll do: Your sponsorship funds the contributors — experts and organisations who lead our online sessions with knowledge of regenerative tourism, guidance on EU sustainability regulations, real-world examples of rural tourism projects, and practical tools participants can use right away. Your support doesn’t just cover their fees, it ensures participants gain access to world-class insights and hands-on tools that can transform rural tourism in Europe.

    • What you get: Prominent recognition as a key supporter across all project communication channels — including social media, newsletters, events, the open-source toolkit, and more — plus the opportunity to help create tourism that leaves places better than we found them.

    💡 Sponsorships start at €500.

  • Here’s how we’re making a difference:

    • Offering vegetarian meals

    • Minimizing single-use plastics

    • Encouraging low-carbon travel options

    • Prioritizing digital materials over printed ones

    • Supporting partners and spaces that align with our commitment to regeneration

And, of course, we encourage all participants to offset their carbon footprint whenever possible so we can collectively contribute to a better planet while enjoying this experience together.
